Primary Purpose
The CID Detective is a sworn Deputy Sheriff assigned to a CID Unit as a criminal investigator. Deputy Sheriffs
are constitutional law enforcement officers acting under the authority of the Sheriff, responsible for maintaining
the peace and safety of our community by providing law enforcement services to the citizens and visitors of St
Johns County. At the direction of CID chain of command staff, CID Detective(s) will be assigned to a specific
and specialized CID Unit:
Behavioral Intervention Detective: The Behavioral Intervention Detective is responsible for conducting investigations to identify high users of the healthcare and jail systems based upon their pre-existing mental illness and attempt to divert them into other treatment options. This detective will also be responsible for identifying subjects with behavioral health related issues that could cause harm to themselves, others, or the community by linking those individuals with social services to mitigate risk. The detective is expected to collaborate with behavioral health partners.
Education and Qualification Requirements
• 19 Years or older
• Valid Florida Driver License
• High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED)
• CJSTC Law Enforcement Certificate
• Knowledge of Department of Children and Families Policy and Protocols
• Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from any branch of the Armed Forces
• Must not have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement
Duties
• Respond to crime scenes and other situations to support other detectives and staff as applicable
• Establish facts through interviews with victims, witnesses, and other sources of information
• Interrogate suspects
• Prepare and execute subpoenas, court orders, and search warrants
• Identify and ensure proper collection of evidence
• Initiate criminal investigations
• Assist other detectives and agencies with investigative requests
• Act quickly and calmly in emergencies
• Administer first aid, arbitrate disputes, conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations, secure crime
scenes, collect evidence, obtain witness statements, apprehend and interview suspects, make arrests, and
transport offenders
• Be engaged with the community and aware of persons and places suspected of illegal activity and/or
potential problems within an assigned area
• Complete detailed reports or supplements on actions taken
• Enter or retrieve data from computer terminals
• Testify as a witness in court of involvement with arrests and investigations
• Attend annual training and maintain required qualifications and certifications
• Answer the on-call phone and respond to incidents as directed by supervisor
• Conduct training for detectives on SJSO procedures for conducting investigations, including new
detective training/orientation
• Participate in the Safeguard Program
• Other duties as assigned

Physical Environment
• Work normal business hours
• Some cases may require work outside of normal business hours, including nights, holidays and
weekends
• Work an on-call schedule as assigned by supervisor and respond within a reasonable amount of time to
after hour call-outs
• Schedules may vary depending on agency needs (i.e. Alpha/Bravo shift due to hurricane deployment)
• Subject to overtime requirements as needed
• Potential exposure to inclement weather, noisy environment, threat of bodily harm, hazardous
conditions, various odors, chemicals, pathogens, unsanitary locations, and unsightly and disturbing
crime scenes and images
• Work may require acts of physical endurance and agility
• Work under highly stressful conditions both in field operations and an office environment
• Operate motor vehicle safely in routine (Code 1) and emergency mode (Code 3)
