Primary Purpose
The Fleet Technician is a civilian position responsible for the installation of various types of equipment into Agency Fleet that may include, but is not limited to radios, antennas, light bars, brackets, control panels, fixed hardware, and other miscellaneous items. Will be assigned specific duties from the Fleet Manager that will assist with the maintenance and management of the Agency’s fleet.
Education Requirement
- High School Diploma or Equivalency
- Associate Degree Preferred
- 2 or more years related experience
- Knowledge of automotive industry and auto mechanics
- Knowledge of 12 volt automotive electrical systems
- Valid FL Driver’s License
- Type 25 WPM, accurately
- Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification preferred
- Computer software experience preferred
Duties
- Complete assignments/special projects as directed.
- Repair/maintain electronic equipment
- Install/remove two way radios and related equipment
- Inspect equipment
- Modify existing equipment
- Maintain and inventory communications equipment
- Perform non-warranty related radio repairs
- Provide equipment/system support
- Troubleshoot problems
- Monitor/schedule and/or conduct maintenance
- Maintain repair log
- Install new equipment
- Maintain emergency communications systems
- Outfit marked and unmarked vehicles to include custom installations
- Receive, route disperse telephone calls/messages
- Maintain files
- Prepare, review, approve, and submit purchase requisitions for equipment/supplies
- Plan hardware purchases and/or installations
- Maintain operational status of hardware
- Maintain and updates maintenance files
- Demonstrate inter-personal skills
- Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills
- Possess knowledge of FCC rules and regulations
- Possess knowledge of 2-way radio/communications systems
- Demonstrate computer/software/office equipment skills/knowledge
- Maintain vehicle operation

- Research new communications equipment/systems technologies
- Make recommendations to staff regarding new/upgrade equipment procurement
- Direct procurement/installation/maintenance/training of new/ upgraded equipment
- Generate proposals for new/upgrade equipment procurement
- Supervise telecommunications equipment repair

Physical Environment
- Frequently performs work, such as grasping, pushing, pulling, reaching above their head and/or away from his/her body, bending, squatting, kneeling, lifting, walking and carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Occasionally climbing, lifting, and carrying up to 100 lbs.
- Work requires sitting, standing and walking as necessary to fulfill the essential functions of the job.
- Position requires the ability to diagnose vehicles for appropriate repair.
- Diagnose agency vehicle alarm issues/malfunctions
- Diagnose and repair basic vehicle equipment failures.
- Maintain back-up fleet, proper operation of emergency equipment and emergency equipment supply.
- Research current fleet issues and future potential fleet options
- Coordinate with I.T. regarding computer infrastructure placement in vehicles, etc.
- Ability to communicate effectively with Agency employees, and various vendors (radio and automotive repair shops, etc.,) on the phone, in person, and in writing while maintaining confidentiality.
- Effective communication skills: reading, writing and speaking English; listening and hearing.
- While in the office, the position requires the ability to operate a telephone, copier, computer (including keyboarding and mouse) to enter, retrieve, and duplicate information.
- Capable of operating a variety of shop equipment such as drill presses, automotive air and electric tools such as impact wrenches, saws; and hand tools such as screwdriver and pliers.
