If you are hired as a Public Safety Telecommunicator and meet the following criteria, you are eligible for  a one-time signing incentive of $2,000*  upon successful completion of  initial probation:
 
  • Must be Florida State Certified in Public Safety Telecommunications
  • Must have a minimum of one (1) year continuous prior Public Safety Telecommunicator experience with an Emergency Management agency in the State of Florida within the last 5 years
  • Must complete initial probation in the Public Safety Telecommunicator position
*This incentive will be subject to a supplemental tax as required by IRS guidelines.


Purpose of Position: The Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) is a highly responsible civilian position which performs a tactical function. This position is required to receive and dispatch emergency (911) and non-emergency calls for Law Enforcement; enter data into computer while questioning callers for information; determine nature, validity and disposition of calls; utilize computer generated messages and priorities to dispatch field units to emergency situations; operate a variety of communications equipment including radio system, and telephones; perform dispatch activities utilizing computer-assisted dispatch system; dispatch and monitor deputies and other designated personnel during emergencies and normal operations, answer or refer inquiries and complaints regarding a wide variety of public safety and related matters; access, retrieve, and transmit vehicular or personal information to field units; relay relevant situational information to other public safety agencies.

Qualifications/Education: High School graduate, Type 25 WPM accurately, Basic knowledge of Microsoft Windows programs, Basic knowledge of general office equipment, ability to achieve FCIC/NCIC Certification, Valid FL Driver’s License.

Working Conditions: Rotating shift work required: 56 day cycles, 12 hour shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends, except when working the switchboard (normal business hours apply). Position is subject to mandatory overtime requirements as needed, and is considered an essential tactical position. Works inside a fast-paced Communications Center where multiple people and multiple functions are occurring simultaneously in close proximity. Works indoors where exposure to the elements and/or exposure to pathogens is minimal. Works under the stress of making decisions in analyzing and ranking service requests and making dispatching decisions, which affect the welfare and safety of the public and other employees.

Abilities: This position functions in fast-paced communications environment and is frequently grasping, pushing, pulling, reaching away from his/her body, and occasionally reaching above his/her head, bending, lifting, and carrying items up to 10 lbs., while working in close proximity to noisy equipment including constant telephone and radio operations. The Telecommunications Operator must have the ability to sit for long periods of time with only occasional standing and limited movement within the office. Must be able to remain calm, control voice, and think quickly, logically and clearly in emergency situations while remembering details. Must be able to demonstrate multifunctional dexterity by focusing on multiple computer screens while operating telephones and two-way radios, and conducting other forms of communication and/or computer operations. Situational Reasoning: the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity to expeditiously assess emergent information against sensory or subjective criteria. Communicates English clearly and effectively with Agency personnel, on the phone, on the radio, and in writing, while maintaining confidentiality. Effective communication skills: reading, writing, and speaking English; listening and hearing.
