Primary Purpose
The School Crossing Guard, is a seasonal civilian position, responsible for the safety and education of school-aged children on the proper safety requirements, while the children are in the designated cross-walks.
Education and Qualification Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Valid FL Driver’s License
- Basic computer knowledge
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is preferred
- Successfully complete the required yearly classroom training and pass a written exam with a minimum of 75%.
- Successfully complete the required yearly practical/field training without children present.
- Successfully complete the required yearly supervised onsite-observations with children present.
Duties
- Identify when it is safe to allow school-aged children to begin crossing the designated crosswalk
- Utilize the eight step approach for crosswalk safety
- Instruct school-aged children on the proper safety techniques while in crosswalks
- Identify proper traffic gaps to safely cross school-aged children
- Repeat crossing procedures multiple times during a designated post assignment
- Visually inspect school crossings and associated marking and signs
- Other duties as assigned

- Report directly to the SCG Coordinator
- Knowledge of and adherence to laws/agency policy/rules/regulations/Standard Operating Procedures
- Display courtesy when dealing with the public
- Demonstrate a positive working relationship with personnel in the agency
- Knowledge of and adherence to the SCG training safety guidelines and verbal instructions for safe crossings
- Adherence to leave and attendance policy and procedures
- Communicate effectively, verbally, electronically, and in writing

Physical Environment
- Seasonal Part-Time- Monday Through Friday-When schools are in session
- Position follows the St. Johns County School Board Calendar (180 days)
- Hours vary, work morning (1.5 hours) and afternoon (1.5 hours) schedule (can be multiple shifts)
- Work under moderately hazardous conditions (identifying gaps in traffic)
- Exposure to various weather conditions
- Exposure to the elements/pathogens is foreseeable
- Blow a whistle and hold a stop paddle above shoulder height for extended periods of time
- Speak understandably
- See at normal range or with accommodations
- Hear at normal level or with accommodations
- Manual dexterity
- Ambulate independently
- Frequent grasp/pull/bend/squat/lift/carry items up to 20lbs
- Frequently walk and stand for extended periods of time
