Introduction to the Internship Program
St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office

Position Title: Intern
Division: General Services

Grade: Unpaid
Hours: Typically 16 hours/week
Category: Regular Risk

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt
Supervised by: Internship Coordinator

Pathogen Risk: Minimal

 

Primary Purpose

The Internship position provides an opportunity for college students to experience the inner workings of a full-service law enforcement agency, while earning credits towards graduation. Further, the program seeks to enhance the knowledge of Criminal Justice students and those whose career path may support the Law Enforcement Community. Qualified interns will work alongside Sheriff’s Office personnel in the various areas including, but not limited to the Patrol, Investigations, Special Operations, Corrections, and several support functions of the office, such as media relations, publications, and the like.

Education and Qualification Requirements

  • Enrolled in a credited College or University seeking a degree
  • Be enrolled in an Internship Program through a credited College or University
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Highly computer literate
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel

Duties

  • Shadow personnel from various Departments at the agency
  • Track and record all intern hours
  • Assist with specialty areas as needed – file and/or retrieve documents
  • Participate in ride alongs or observations in the communications center, booking area, or corrections control rooms
  • Complete a one-page paper describing your time at the agency
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Controls and Complexities

  • Report directly to supervisor
  • Adhere to laws/agency policy/rules/ regulations/SOP/ procedures
  • Scheduling of duties should remain flexible and will be coordinated between the intern, the coordinator and the assigned section. The Intern will be informed as to the standards of conduct expected and Intern Coordinator may take disciplinary action, including separation, in the event of an infraction.
  • Maintain confidentiality/security of files and information obtained in the course of internship
  • Maintain continuity and operational efficiency by accurate and timely dissemination of information to assigned area
